Drugstore Starter Kit.
There are so many great products these days at the drug store, that it isn’t necessary (unless you want to obviously) to spend a fortune on getting a great starter kit together. This is a breakdown of some of my favourite high street products that I would put in my starter kit.
I’ll go in the order that I would apply it to my face. So starting with a primer – it has to be No7 Instant Illusions Rapid Radiance Balance, I won’t dwell on this for long, as I did talk about it just yesterday. But in short it is great and gives a wonderful lit from within glow to the skin.
Foundation – until recently I would have really struggled to pick from a range of great drugstore foundations which are all as great as each other. However last week I started using the new L’Oreal Paris Infallible Sculpt Foundation – WOW. It is hands down the best affordable foundation I have ever used. Flawless, light, dewy, moisturising and a bargain at £8.99.
Concealer – this one is a little trickier to pick just one as there a few really good ones out there, so I am going to cheat and recommend my three favourites – Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer, Maybelline Eraser Eye Concealer, Rimmel Match Perfection Illuminating Concealer.
Eyebrows – Soap and Glory Archery 2-in-1 Brow Pencil and Brush. This is hands down my favourite brow product from the high street, I always have one in back up. This is currently on offer in Boots for £6.
Eyeshadows – As for eyeshadows, there is such an amazing selection on the high street; they have improved so much since I first started wearing eyeshadows many moons ago (or maybe I have just learned to apply them better.) So you are slightly spoilt for choice but I would recommend a palette for your starter kit, as you will get you a good selection of colours and it is much more cost effective. There are two stand outs for me – L’Oreal Color Riche La Palette Nude in Rose (the colour choice is purely a preference, as the rosy colours suit my blue eyes) this is £14.99 and you get 10 colours, all of which offer great pigmentation and last really well without creasing. The other is the Collection Eyes Uncovered palette, which is amazing value at £3.99 for 6 shades. The shadows are so blendable and creamy, you just wouldn’t believe they were drugstore shadows.
Mascara – I am a short, straight eyelashed girl. So I really struggle to find a mascara I love. My all-time favourite from the drugstore is definitely Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof. It holds a curl, it separates my lashes and makes them look longer and fuller. It doesn’t transfer or flake throughout the day either. £7.99 from Boots.
Bronzer / Blusher / Highlighter – Bronzer and highlighters are the two products I find the drugstore struggle to do well – there certainly are a few out there but not as great of a selection. That said, I would definitely recommend for a starter kit the Collection Blush and Glow palette. You get two absolutely gorgeous peachy toned blushers and a bronzer and a highlighter all for only £4.99
Lips – there is just so so much choice here. Balms, stains, mattes, glosses, sheer, opaque, nude, bold – you get the idea, the list is endless. A few favourites of mine are Maybelline Sensational Nudes or Sensational Mattes. The nudes are very creamy and hydrating and as you would guess neutral toned. The Mattes are also what they say on the tin – matte – which will always be more drying but they last well and really give the drama you want from a bold matte lip. Both are only £6.99
