Dermalogica is a brand that I tried out many years ago now – maybe 9 or 10 years ago – and I had quite a bad reaction to it. So I have avoided the entire brand since then. However, I was kindly sent the new Superfoliant, along with 3 other Dermalogica products to review and thought maybe it was time to put them to the test again, as your skin changes a lot in that time period.
How it works
I am really pleased I actually made myself re-try the brand as I have really enjoyed testing it out. The superfoliant is a lose fairly dark grey powder that is water activated. You pour a little into your hand and then add water to activate it and it creates more of a lather. You then rub it in circular motions around the face, gently removing dead skin and impurities.
It is created to be gentle enough to use daily, but to still give the exfoliation you want. I don’t personally use it daily, but I have really enjoyed incorporating it into my weekly routine.
This is what Dermalogica says about the product:
“Daily Superfoliant activates upon contact with water, releasing a trio of powerful enzymes, skin-resurfacing alpha hydroxy acids and anti-pollution technology.
Activated Binchotan Charcoal purifies the skin, helping to adsorb environmental toxins from deep within the pores, while Niacinamide, Red Algae and Tara Fruit Extract help guard against the damaging effects of pollution.”
Availability and Pricing
Dermalogica is really widely available in the UK. John Lewis, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols and Feelunique are just a few of the places where you can get your hands on the Dermalogic range. You can get a full size bottle (a random 57 grams) for £55 or a little travel size bottle (13 grams) for £17.
Included in the package was also the pre-cleanse balm, which comes in a squeezable tube. (Not to be mistaken for the “precleanse” this comes in a bottle and isn’t a balm.) It is a beautiful smelling cleansing balm, to remove your makeup. This, as you would expect from the name, is great for your first cleanse. It breaks down the makeup and dirt from the day. I do find I need to use quite a large amount of the product to fully cover the face. This may be psychological as it is in a tube rather than a tub. I would definitely add this this into my regular rotation, as it feel great on the skin, smells great and does a great job.
As with most Dermalogica products, you can buy the travel size or full size, which I think is such a great idea. Full size is £44 and the travel size is £14.70
Special Cleansing Gel
This special cleansing gel is designed to be your second cleanse, so you go in with this after your precleanse balm. This would be great, I think, for someone who doesn’t enjoy the feeling of a thick balm on this skin. Perhaps someone with oilier skin. It does a great job, it just isn’t my choice of cleanser. I always gravitate towards a balm or a thick luxurious cream and never a gel cleanser.
Pricing here is even broader, as they do 3 different sizes. Ranging from £10 – £52.50.
Skin Soothing Cream
The skin soothing cream is a moisturiser designed to balance combination / dry skin. I do not have combination skin at all. I have dry, sensitive and dehydrated, but it still worked nicely. It would however; be far more suitable for someone who does have slightly combination skin. It contains Vitamin C and E as well as Grape Seed Extract, Aloe gel, Mallow and cucumber. So there are some really nourishing and soothing ingredients.
